Linguists conduct much politeness research and propose significant politeness theories, especially Grice's Cooperative Principle,Leech's Politeness Principle and Brown and Levinson's politeness strategies. There are not only the polite phenomena but also the impolite phenomena in daily communication. In spite of the fact that the polite and impolite behaviors both exist in the communication, the impoliteness does not get enough attention. Most of the studies on impoliteness are conducted with the purpose of being polite. In 1996,Culpeper defined impoliteness and put forward the model of impoliteness strategies.Later,Culpeper(2005)and Bousfield(2008)supplemented impoliteness strategies.Although many scholars applies impoliteness strategies to different discourse, there is little research on impoliteness strategies in mediation discourse. This thesis analyzes the impoliteness phenomena in mediation discourse and explores the pragmatic function of impoliteness strategy, based on the previous studies. On the basis of Culpeper's(1996)and Bousfield 's(2008)impoliteness theory, this study gives a comparative analysis on impoliteness strategies used by hosts and guests in mediation discourse. The thesis answers four research questions:(1)What are the impoliteness strategies used by guests and their functions in TV mediation discourse?(2)What are the impoliteness strategies used by hosts and their functions in TV mediation discourse?(3)What are the similarities and differences between impoliteness strategies used by hosts and guests in TV mediation discourse?(4)What are the similarities and differences between pragmatic functions realized by guests and hosts in TV mediation discourse? The data in the study come from the TV mediation show,“Si Da Ming Zhu”.197 turns on impoliteness are collected in the study, with 121 turns on impoliteness of hosts and 76 turns on impoliteness of guests. The data are analyzed according to the following steps: Firstly, these turns are classified, based on the 12 kinds of output strategies.Secondly, the frequency and percentage of impoliteness strategies used byguests and hosts are counted.Thirdly, the similarities and differences of the impoliteness strategies used by guests and hosts are discussed.Fourthly, pragmatic functions of impoliteness strategies used by guests and hosts are analyzed.Fifthly, the study analyzes the similarities and differences between the functions of impoliteness strategies employed by hosts and guests in TV mediation discourse. The conclusions could be drawn:(1)The similarities between impoliteness strategies used by hosts are following.Firstly,Hosts and guests both tend to use the positive and negative impoliteness.Secondly,The strategies of hindering and bald on record are frequently used both by hosts and guests. When comes to the differences between them, hosts use more impoliteness strategies and kinds of impoliteness stratgeies.(2)It can be concluded that the hosts use impoliteness strategy with many purposes, like entertaining the audience and showing speaking power while guests use impoliteness strategy mainly to defend for themselves.Theoretically, this thesis finds a new function of impoliteness strategy, belittling, which enriches the previous studies.Additionally, the study aims to help hosts maintain a better relationship between guests and solve the problems of the interlocutors in an efficient way.
