English writing is regarded as the most complicated skill which reflects student's comprehensible ability for use. There are various researches about the influence of negative transfer of mother tongue on student's English writing. However,in college English writing, the phenomenon of negative transfer of mother tongue still exits and appears frequently. The author attempts to discuss this problem from the perspective of a learner's cognition. With the development of the cognitive linguistics, noticing as the important concept in psychology has been gradually extended to the research field of second language acquisition.Schmidt(1993,2001)stated that attention plays active role in the process of language learning and is the necessary condition for language acquisition. In Noticing Hypothesis,Schmidt(1990)proposed that the language acquisition would never occur unless language learners notice the gap between their interlanguage and the target language.Drawing on Schmidt' noticing theories, the author carried out the study on non-English majors of the second year in Northwest Minzu University. This study lasted one semester.120 subjects from two parallel classes were taught by the same English teacher, each class including 60 students. The author selected one class as the Experimental Class and the other as the Control Class.Qualitative and quantitative analysis were adopted in the research. The instruments involved in this study include the questionnaire, interview and writing tests(pretest and posttest).Collected data from questionnaire and interview were analyzed in the form of the percentage. The results of writing tests from two classes were compared and analyzed by SPSS 22.0.The purpose of the study is to explore the effectiveness of noticing strategies on alleviating negative transfer of mother tongue in English writing. The research findings show: 1)Negative transfer errors appear the most in English writing of non-English major undergraduates;2)The main reason for this phenomenon is that students don't pay enough attention to the difference between English and Chinese, resulting in inadequacy of language knowledge;3)Teaching strategy based on noticing hypothesis is an effective way of minimizing negative transfer in English writing. Finally, some proposals for further research are put forward for second language acquisition and teaching.
