Three Junes is the 2002 U.S.National Book Prize winner Julia Glass' s debut,in which the main characters are gay homosexuals. The account of the novel is enriched in emotional depiction of male characters.Freud's Mourning and Melancholia and David L.Eng.and David Kazanjian's Mourning Remains provide illuminating perspective in analyzing the homosexual characters' affective state of melancholia, its crisis and its power in this work. The thesis firstly diagnoses the manifestations of the melancholia of homosexual characters, including self-debasement,fear and the depressed mourning: such as the self-debasement which Fenno suffers from a separation of family and from his rickety romance relationship, his fear and guilt towards the threat of AIDS;as well as Mal's fear for the privation of human agency in the chronic decline of AIDS.The long time span of melancholic feeling and its inhibited expression(or no expression)are also characteristic of homosexual character's melancholia.Secondly, their emotions detect the homosexuals' predicament that contributes to melancholia in the context of heterosexual culture, which involves individual dimension, social dimension and cultural dimension: such as the immoral sexual promiscuity and issue of trust as well as the AIDS disaster in homosexual intimate relationship;the exclusion from heterosexual family against homosexual, and culturally the existential crisis of certain homosexual group accordingly.Thirdly, the loss of homosexuals' melancholia has positive power from its diagnostic function. The melancholic reaction towards heterosexual culture,is a revolt of its disadvantages. It paves the way for motivational tendency for offsetting the loss to create new homosexual discourse, namely, the homosexual democracy in intimacy,a more diverse family mode, and the establishment of homosexual subjectivity,so as to add new momentum and material to the homosexual culture as a whole. In conclusion, the reading of the existential crisis of homosexual characters and potentials for homosexual culture from a negative affective experience of melancholia,is a wedding of emotional and cultural study: the micro aspect of melancholic emotion detects the and sexual and cultural crisis of homosexual characters, their innate risk and external exclusion, while at the same time this diagnosis has its power in establishing homosexual subjectivity and adding new material to what can be complemented to homosexual culture.
