In organizational situation,impression management generally defined as behaviors that employees use to shape how they are seen by others,it plays an important role in employment decision,performance appraisal and promotion.Impression management does not only occur when there are explicit social goals,but merely providing status information of interaction partner can have an impact on individual's impression management inclination,which is based on group stereotype and the social compensation.In the organizational situation,status differences are not the only inequalities,gender also contains status clues,men are considered to have higher status and higher competence,female are considered relatively low and warmer,as the dual characteristics in the community more and more popular,is this intrinsic connection also changing?How does gender and status affect individual impression management?Does this impression management based on group stereotypes Serve different goals depending on the direction of comparison?This paper explores the influence of targets' gender and status on the dynamic changes of warmth and competence in individual impression management through three studies.The study1 examines whether different warmth and competence performance can affect the inference of gender and status.The study2 explores the influence of status and gender information on individual's impression management inclination in the dimension of warmth and competence,and study3 further examines whether the goal of this impression management varies with different comparative directions.Study1 divides into three sub-studies,the study la provided only the information of warmth and competence description,study lb provided warmth and competence description and gender,study lc provided warmth and competence description and relative status,let the participants make inferences on gender or relative statu.The results showed that when the target was described as competent,the participants made the greatest degree of male and superior inference,and when the target was described as warm,the participants were given the greatest degree of female and subordinate inference.It shows that men and high status are still associated with competence traits,while female and low status are still associated with warm traits.Study2 provides information on the gender and relative status of interaction partner,and to examine their influence on the impression management of warmth and competence dimension.The results show that individuals show competence when faced with superiors,and show warmth when faced with peers and subordinates.Female participants show competence when faced with male,show warmth when faced with female,and the effect is not significant on male participants.To male superiors will be the greatest degree of lower warmth to performance competence,to female subordinates will be the greatest degree of lower capacity to performance enthusiasm,show warmth to both male and female peers,has no obviously impression management inclination,show competence to female superior.Study3 explores the difference of the goal of impression management by comparing the individual's rate on warmth and competence of interaction partner of different gender and relative status,and also how warm and competent they thought the partner would rate them.The results show that there are matching and disconfirming for the impression management goals of male superior simultaneously,and matching for female superior;disconfirming for the goal of impression management of male subordinate,and disconfirming and matching for female subordinate simultaneously.From the above three studies,it is concluded that the inequality of status and gender in organizational situation can influence the impression management in interpersonal interaction,and the performance of individual in warmth and competence will change dynamically with different interaction partner,which based on stereotype.the goal of impression management will vary with different objects.
