The Inspection Of The Formation And The Evolution Of The Idioms Of S-P-S-P Pattern

Recently we have seen a continual deep-going research in the field of Chinese idioms and four-character structures.Abundant accomplishments have been made since idioms dictionary,idioms research treatises as well as papers have been seen a constant emergence.However,in the past,the studies of Chinese idiom mostly focused on some synchronic aspects like the classification,the syntactic function or the standard usages of idioms,thus seem insufficient in diachronic fields,such as an evolution of meaning or a change of using of an idiom in its developing process.This dissertation would mainly focus on the formation and the diachronic evolution of the idioms of S-P-S-P pattern,using the idioms�caishu-xueqian"(????),�caozhang-yingfei�(????),�qili-zisan�(????),�renzhi-yijin�(????),�xinggao-cailie�(????)and�yuanyuan-liuchang�(????)as cases.The main section of this dissertation contains three chapters(the first chapter to the third chapter).The first chapter inspects the process of diachronic evolution of some idioms of S-P-S-P pattern,which derive from ancient classics,all have a high frequency of use in modern Chinese and easy to understand,using the method of case analysis.And the usages of the variants of those idioms are also included.The second chapter discusses the motivations that lead the formation of the idioms of S-P-S-P pattern through the aspects of prosody,meanings,syntactical circumstances,psychological cognition,etc.The third chapter discusses some regulations related to the diachronic evolution of the idioms of S-P-S-P pattern,which include the changing of both formation and meanings of the idioms of S-P-S-P pattern,as well as the reasons that cause the emergence of variants.This dissertation hold the view that there are plenty of motivations which can form an idiom of S-P-S-P pattern,such as the prosody in Chinese as well as the restriction of four-character structures,the limitation of semantic relation,the cause of the evolution of word meaning,the change of syntactical circumstances,the psychological cognition and so on.All of these can be the factors which may promote the original structures ultimately evolve into an idiom of S-P-S-P pattern.Besides,the preferences of symmetrical structure in the circumstances of Chinese,the significant influence of ancient classics are also the factors that shall not be ignored in the processes of formation and the evolution of Chinese idioms.
