Metaphor Translation In Political Documents From The Perspective Of Conceptual Integration Theory

With the rapid development of Chinese economy and the rise of international status of China,political documents issued by Chinese government hold the key to shaping international image,leading to more and more attention on the translation of political documents.However,there exist quite a few difficulties translating political documents on account of abundant metaphors.Metaphor has roused an upsurge of studies at home and abroad,but the studies on the translation of metaphors in political documents are pretty scarce.Therefore,the thesis explores the metaphor translation in political documents under the framework of conceptual integration theory with Report on the Work of the Government(RWG)and English versions as examples.Under the framework of conceptual integration theory,the thesis explores the integration network on the basis of the extension of network models and applies the extended simple network model,mirror network model,single-scope network model and double-scope network model to analyze the three phases of integration processes involving the translation process of metaphor.Translation guided by conceptual integration theory is composed of three phases of conceptual integration.The first phase is the comprehension of metaphor and the meaning construction process is analyzed in the phase,which is the premise to translate metaphor.The second phase is the expression of metaphor and the cognitive mental spaces of translator are reconstructed in the meantime.The perfection of metaphoric expression is the third phase and the translator considers whether metaphoric expression can be accepted from reader's perspective with an aim to perfecting the target text.The study finds that the translation process of metaphor in RWG is a conceptual integration process and conceptual integration theory can reveal the translation process on a cognitive level.The conclusions are mentioned as follows:First of all,the study provides a new perspective for the studies on metaphor translation in political documents.In addition,the extended network models constructed in the thesis are instructive to the translation of metaphors in political documents,which helps translators better translate the metaphors in political documents.
