Hugh Latimer,as one of the most important priests during the English Reformation, who was honored as "apostle to the English".He was a staunch Catholic and turned Protestant under the influence of Protestantism.Through communicating with Protestants and disputing with Catholic, the remnants of the old teachings was abandoned, and he became a devout Protestant. He had disseminated Protestant thoughts all around his country via preaching which mediated between the Crown and people. His thoughts and practice reflected the imprint of that time as well as his own social ideal. That is changing imprisonment by Catholic church for the English, attempting to build a blueprint for Protestant allied countries, and regulating beliefs and responsibilities for the king, priests and believers to disperse the haze enveloped by the Catholic Church, and making English religious atmosphere a new look. The social idea that Latimer proposed provided reference for Elizabeth I.The paper is divided into introduction, text and conclusion, and the text includes four chapters. The first chapter focuses on Latimer's early life and the origin of his Protestant thoughts.Although Latimer came from yeoman family,he got a decent education, which established a solid base for his cause. The second chapter relates to Latimer's Protestant thoughts. His thought can be comprehended though his sermons, which was influenced by Protestant thoughts but presented a certain conservatism. The third chapter discusses his practice of Reformation. Before Henry VIII started his official Reformation,Latimer already accepted Protestant thoughts and publicized these thoughts at Cambridge University.Afterwards,he was preferred by royal members and joined official Reformation. However,he preferred to propagate thoughts in the private sector than for royal and to reorganize the order of grass-roots church. The fourth chapter studies Latimer's contribution to the British religious reform. On the one hand, his reform practice promoted the official Reformation of Henry VIII and Edward VI.On the other hand,it promoted the acceptance and recognition of Protestantism among the people and played a more exemplary role in regulating the code of conduct of the grassroots priests.
