Hemingway,an outstanding American novelist in the 20th Century, has a strong African complex. From the yearning for Africa to the two trips to Africa, the African image he described also changed in these three stages. This paper, takes his African tour as the clue, takes his diary and the African theme novels as the main research object,to demonstrate the evolution and internal tension of Africa's image in the three phases of its writing and to reveal the reasons of its formation and significance. Before he went to Africa, affected by the social environment and personal consciousness,he imagined Africa as a "great frontier" and "a good place",so as to hope for the hero's dream and the hope of the adult; The first time he saw Africa, his focus is on the natural landscape of Africa, but it is influenced by both personal and collective consciousness,on the one hand,he wrote Africa as a wild continent full of life,it has a simple and charming natural scenery, natural zoo and the enthusiasm of the crowd Mnjikaning, full of wildness and vitality, and it becomes a spiritual refuge for whites to escape modern civilization;on the other hand,he wrote it as the kingdom of the westerners, the rivalry of the white hunter and the silent other,in order to characterize the desire of the white subject; The second time he saw Africa,on the one hand, due to changes in the times, the author's personal outlook on nature and his ethical views also changed, prompting him to change his views on African nature and indigenous peoples,as well as,he focused on the human landscape in Africa,he constructed the "African Africa",having a charming landscape. The author tried to blend into nature and Africa,to build a better "religious kingdom";on the other hand, influenced by the collective consciousness,he constructed it as a vassal of the western economy and civilization. It can be seen that, due to the conflict between the endless subject desire in the author's ideology and the belief in the original appearance of the colony, and the conflict between the collective consciousness and the individual consciousness, the image of Africa under his pen is full of tension and is at the pole of utopia and ideology.Utopia's African image shown the author's reflection of modern industrial civilization, revealing the plight of modern people and revealing that he tries to treat the immersed American culture in primitive,life-filled Africa and hoped to reshape individual ideal personality from this ideal home in Africa. The ideological image of Africa shown that he has never been able to get rid of the embarrassment of the collective ideology of Western society, exposes the western subject's desires and hegemony ideology represented by the author,as well as their economic and cultural superiority and self-esteem,shows the close relationship between exotic images and politics, economy and culture. This helps to understand the relationship between the African image created by the author and American traditional culture and his attitude toward the country's culture.
