Medical English is an important branch of scientific English, which plays an extremely important role in international scientific and technological exchanges. The essence of medical translation is the intercultural communication of medical information which aims at promoting medical and cultural exchanges among different countries and ethnic groups. This project is mainly based on a Chinese to English translation task of medical survey reports on people with diabetes in Tianjin assigned by a research group from Tianjin Medical University. The survey's aim is to analyze diabetes prevalence under large amounts of data to find out the causes of diabetes and sum up and deduce what sort of people have more severe diabetes, furthermore,to publish the survey reports in professional English. The translation of these medical survey reports can help us to show the present status of diabetes study around the world and promote the communication with the world's most advanced medical research groups and institutions to stimulate the development of medical science,so as to actually improve people's health and living standards.Starting with the analysis of textual features of medical texts based on the task, the author carries on the project under the theoretical guidance of German Functionalist theories, especially under Katharina Reiss' s text typology and the Skopos theory. Then the author elaborates difficulties encountered in the translation process from the perspective of translation of terminology, sentences and cultural differences and summarizes a number of corresponding translation techniques including conversion of part of speech, amplification, omission, sentence combination, conversion of voices and rearrangement of sentence order to solve the difficulties. As the report reveals, when undertaking medical translation task,a translator should first analyze the features of text type and figure out the purpose, target readers and function of the target text. Then, guided by proper translation theories, the translator choose suitable translation techniques to solve practical difficulties.Theauthor hopes that this study could offer some references to relevant researchers thereafter.
