This paper reports a case study of English teaching of Mr.L,who often uses Chinese culture in his English class teaching.It aims to analyze and explore Mr.L's cultural teaching concept and his classroom practice,to describe his way of cultivating students' cultural awareness in English teaching,and expects to provide references for other teachers to cultivate students' cultural awareness.Mr.L is the subject of this study,who is a senior high school teacher teaching in a well-known senior high school in Tianjin.In the process of the research,the main research methods used were classroom observation,interview and journal.By means of classroom observation and journal,his teaching cases were collected and the cultural teaching characteristics were analyzed.Through the interview,Mr.L's concept and attitude towards cultural teaching were clarified,and the factors that influenced his teaching style were discussed in this paper as well.What's more,Mr.L also mentioned some difficulties encountered in his daily cultural teaching.It is found that Mr.L attached great importance to culture teaching,and he believed that education is to spread culture and language itself contains culture.However,he seldom imparted culture knowledge in a declarative and explicit way.Instead,he employed Chinese culture in designing lead-in part for reading class,in creating context for vocabulary teaching and in helping students appreciate the beauty of language and correcting compositions,cultivating students' culture awareness and love of Chinese culture implicitly.His teaching style is based on his love of Chinese culture.He enjoys reading Chinese traditional literature in his spare time and tries to combine them with English teaching.Besides,he can effectively use pedagogical and psychological knowledge,as well as prepare for the lessons elaborately.Based on these reasons,he does well in combining culture teaching with language teaching,which plays a role in the cultivation of students' cultural awareness.It is hoped that this paper may provide reference for other English teachers.
