Zhang Hua is a famous politician and litterateur in Western Jin Dynasty,he has tremendous influence in political and literary world and played an important part in the transformation of literary style.In overall view,his life has been a tragedy and the present thesis investigates the relationship between his tragic life and the composition of his poetry.In summary,his tragic life has two main origins.First being the difference between one's idealism and reality,he is eager to participate and wishes to achieve in politics,to dedicate his life to the country and the people.But the unpredictable political situation and the boastful ethos of scholars shattered his idealisms.The second being his own inner contradictions and conflict.He is subjected to Confucian education from childhood and has strong root in the Confucian views and values.In the meantime,he soaks in the tide of society and gained his own understanding of metaphysics.The coexistence of Confucian and metaphysical thoughts caused conflictions,restrained his decisions and torture him soul.At last,he became another innocent victim of ‘Rebellions of Eight Princes' and died in the hands of Wang Lun Zhao and Xiu Sun.It is no surprise that such tragic life is blended into his words and writings,projected into and reflected by his writings and compositions.From the perspective of emotions and affections,his work is more about sorrow,it is often seen with three major themes in his words: worries and wonders of life,pathetic political path,pain in mourning the death.The worries and wonders of life focused on his self-affections,put emphasis on himself and express the various disappointments in life.Pathetic political path vividly describes his unsuccessful political life and reflects his suffering in such a path.Pain in mourning the death on the other hand expressed how he missed the dead and his own fear on death.It conveys the true affections caused by the end of lives and the sadness that came with.Overall,his sorrowful thoughts and unique style can be summarized into two aspects.First being his worries for life and the worries for society.The formal conveyed his worries and thoughts about life,expressed his attention and emphasis on life.The latter expressed the worries for the country,the people and the problems that arise in real life.The second being his ‘magnificent and glamour' writings,it has attentions to details and emphasis on emotions.Zhan Hua favors on ‘emotions first then dressings on literature',he chose to emphasis first on personal feelings and affections but not to dismiss the pursuing of ‘magnificent and glamour'writings.Zhang Hua is a predecessor in the literary world of Western Jin Dynasty,his writings and compositions have very large influence.He is not only the successor of Han & Wei literary style but also the pioneer of the glamorous writing in Western Jin Dynasty,his work has greatly pushed the development of literature thereafter and plays an important role in the history of Chinese literature...
