Artistic symbolism,Artistic illusion, living forms, and Artistic intuition are the main contents of Susanne K.Langer's philosophy of art.In these theories,Artistic intuition aims to solve the epistemological problem in Langer's philosophy of art,it is dedicated to answering the question, how do humans to understand the meaning of artistic symbols. On the basis of traditional intuitionism,Langer critically absorbed many viewpoints of modem aesthetics and put forward the assertion that "intuition is a basic rational activity".In the framework of artistic symbolism and new assertions,Langer interprets an intuitive theory of art with logical representation as the core proposition, symbolic transformation as the main function, and artistic living forms as the object of insight. The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters and conclusion. The introduction summarizes the research background of Susanne K.Langer's philosophy of art, summarizes the focus and inadequacies of the existing research at home and abroad, demonstrates the feasibility of the study of artistic intuition theory, and explains the basic ideas and methods of this research. The first chapter clarifies the context of Susanne K.Langer's theory of artistic intuition. On the question of how to understand the meaning of art forms,Langer discussed the aesthetic viewpoints of expressionism aesthetics, modern intuitionist aesthetics,British formalism aesthetics, naturalistic aesthetics, and pragmatism aesthetics. All of them have provided a broad aesthetic history context for Susanne K.Langer's theory of artistic intuition.Firstly,in the process of specific textual argumentation,Langer clarified the views of intuitionism represented by Croce and Bergson.Secondly,Susanne K.Langer re-examined and reinforced the rational characteristics of "intuition" from the standpoint of logic and Cassirer's semiotic theory.Inspired by Locke, she gives "intuition" the dimension of the human mind.In the context of historical reality and concrete texts,Langer interprets a more systematic theory of artistic intuition based on the concept of "intuition" and its characteristics. The second chapter elaborates the theoretical connotation of Susanne K.Langer's theory of artistic intuition.Based on the absorption of numerous theoretical resources,Langer completed the purge of traditional intuitionism and proposed that "intuition is a basic rational activity." First of all,Langer pointed out that intuition is a special manifestation with logic as the core, that is to say, intuition is a kind of logical expression.Secondly,Langer emphasizes that intuition is a symbolic process from a functional perspective. She believes that intuition is not only a process of art ion,but also serves the projection and transformation of emotions.Furthermore,in the relationship between intuition and direct experience,Langer believes that art is the organismal living forms, and intuition is a holistic insight or epiphany about the living forms. The third chapter examines the value of Susanne K.Langer's theory of artistic intuition and its' self-reflection.Based on the new semiotic theory,Langer's theory of artistic intuition is not only a blend with traditional intuitionism, but also a rational surpassing of traditional intuitionism. It further enriches the intuition in terms of logic, symbol, psychology and even physiology. In the art education, due to the procedural and integral features of intuition, the process of artistic intuition has become a life activity that realizes the integration of things. This is not only a reflection of Langer's concept of emotional education that allows art to return to the essence of life, but also a rebuttal to the opinion concluding art education as tool.In spite of this, due to the theory's transcendental idealism tendency, coupled with Langer's over-reliance on the psychology and physiology scienc,es,the theory of artistic intuition has finally returned to the mysticism.Due to the nourishment of various theoretical resources, especially the baptism of new symbolism,Susanne K.Langer provides a new understanding of artistic intuition with the attitude of breakthrough. The art education view of "Let art return to the essence of life" embodies the Langer's philosophy of art's ultimate care for the organic living of human beings. It also has an extremely beneficial value for Chinesetraditional aesthetics.Langer's objective academic attitude and multidisciplinary comprehensive research methods also provide references for the study of aesthetic issues.
