The character of the wolf is significant in literature.At the end of 20 th century,the environment was under worse destruction.At that time,the literary character of wolf became popular in modern fictions.Mr.Yin Guoming said that the wolf has deeply involved in composition of Chinese modern literature and engaged in strong changes,transformation,contradictions and struggles.The words show that the character of the wolf in fictions gains more special meaning that is worthy exploring.This thesis at first made clear of the development of meanings of literary character of the wolf.Culture of wolves is shared by different nations in all regions from ancient times.In ancient China,our ancestors had customs of dancing with wolves.In the literature of minority groups,especially horde ethnic groups,the character of wolf was positive and sacred,but in ethnic Han,domain of agriculture civilization,people showed their alienation and hate to wolf.The character of evil wolves was widely accepted.Until modern times,Mr.Lu Xun reshaped the character of wolf,which was more and more discussed and written.This thesis focused on images of wolf in literature since 1980 s and analyzed types of wolf ' s images by reading literary works.This thesis classified the wolves' images into three categories that were wolves under controls,wolves in worship and wolves set free.Chapter one is wolves under control.Main references were Dream of the Wolf King,Disabled Wolf Huiman,Red lamb,Stories of wolves,The Grey Wolf.In these novels,images of wolves are strong,they struggle in hardship and are fearless for betrayal of others and never give in to human's challenges,they stick to their dreams.In composition,these works had features of conception-and people-oriented that showed authors control of wolves.Chapter two,wolves in worship.Main reference books were Totem of Wolf by Jiang Rong,Wolf Boy in Desert by Guo Xuebo,The ValleyHaunted by Wolves by Wang Fenling,Miss the Wolves by Jia Pingwa.Those fictions were mainly based on culture of belief and Eco-environment and showed real images of wolves and add authors' worship to wolves and thoughts on relations between human and wolves.Later on,images of holy wolves were created.The figures of the loyal wolf in The Valley Haunted by Wolves,the hero in Wolf Boy in Desert,the smart wolf in Miss the Wolves and the holy wolf in Totem of Wolf had clearer characteristics of heroes and full of scared spirit and showed respect to the wolf.Thoes works explored the meaning of wolf totems in minority groups and thought human-wolf relations in ecologic environment.Chapter three,wolves set free.The thesis mainly studied To Return to the Wolves by Li Weiyi,Return to the Wolves II,In Realm of Wolf:Notes of28 Days of Watching Wolves.Authors got along with wolves on an equal footing,interacted and communicated with wolves for a long time and finally composed documentary animal fictions.We should not only set free wolves but their habitats.Guided by the thoughts of unity of man and nature,these works see wolves on an equal footing,build a harmonious and beautiful green relationship between man and nature with benevolence,equity.This thesis analyzed various types of the characters of wolf in modern fictions and reflected in deep level of national culture and environmental civilization through descriptions by different authors.
