The development of society requires colleges and universities to train more qualified translators to meet the demand of market.Recently,in the area of foreign language teaching, the training of translation competence has been paid more and more attention by scholars. And some achievements have been made in related fields. However, most of these achievements are reflected in the target language teaching, which leads to the imbalance between the target language and native language in foreign language teaching. At the same time,Chinese competence as a branch of translation competence has also aroused the concern of many scholars. This paper analyzes the present situation of MTI students' native language competence through the National Occupation of Chinese Proficiency Test(ZHC),finds out problems and explores possible solutions. This paper takes the native language competence as the research core. The research is based on Claire Kramsch's Third Place Theory and the further development of the Third Place Theory by scholars, and adopts the research method of data statistics.Through the tests and questionnaires,61 MTI students in the Grade One and Grade Two were surveyed. The study includes three aspects:the current situation of MTI students' native language competence, the current situation of MTI students'English-Chinese translation ability, and the attitude towards the identity of native language competence and the self-assessment of native language competence.Based on the collection and analysis of 52 valid questionnaires, the research draws some conclusions:Firstly, the participants do not have adequate native language knowledge and their translated versions are sometimes regarded as the "inappropriate";secondly, the participants in the questionnaire clearly indicate that native language competence is highly relevant to the quality of translation. In view of this, the author tries to make some suggestions:Firstly,to revise the proportion of the training of native language competence in the syllabus;secondly, write more Chinese characters, write accurate Chinese characters;thirdly,to highlight the comprehensiveness of the translation training materials;fourthly,to increase the practicality of the learning content. The author hopes the above suggestions can make a little contribution to improving the translation ability of MTI students and the current situation of MTI students' native language competence and the ability of intercultural communication.
