The report is based on the translation of four briefings of The Economist from 2016 to 2017.The topics are Liquidity Crisis,Amazon,America’s Checks and Balances and Synthetic Drugs, covering many areas like politics and economy, natural environment, science and technology, commerce and finance. The Economist has both the characteristics of financial texts and English news, which not only reflects the accuracy and vividness of news, but also represents the professionalism of financial texts. As the text is influenced by different ideology and culture, the choice and extension of lexical meaning are the most basic and urgent problem in the translation. This paper will learn from previous research results and combine with its own practice to illustrate how to make the translation as professional and faithful as possible through the choice and extension of word meaning under the linguistic features of The Economist. This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One provides the background of the task, and shows the practical significance of the translation.Chapter Two is the description of the translation process, including the preparation, the translation and proofreading.Chapter Three analyzes the characteristics of the source text language and summarizes some difficulties in the process of translation.Chapter Four,as the main body of the report, explores the problems in terms of the choice and extension of lexical meaning and puts forward some corresponding solutions through examples. The fifth chapter is a summary of the practice, and expounds the author’s understanding and thinking in the process of the translation practice.
