In both English and Chinese, there are words that function as more than one part of speech and have more than one meaning. In the process of translating from English into Chinese, we should decide the meaning of a word cautiously according to the context and its collocation with other words, rather than merely rely on the dictionary, before rendering it into Chinese appropriately. As to the English words which have hidden implications, if we translate them literally or word by word, the translation will be incomprehensible, or even misleading, with the original meaning of the expressions totally lost. In this situation, we should extend their lexical meanings in order to make them understood by the target reader.The purpose of the selection and extension of lexical meanings is to make translation more faithful and coherent and to render the original content more adequately. Therefore, it is important that the appropriate selection and moderate extension of lexical meanings should be attained.
