In the background of the rise of the study of Epigraphy in the Qing Dynasty,Jueluo Chongen(1803-1878)appeared as a famous appreciator and collector of inscription rubbing.He was known as the "Manchu Talent" who was especially in favor of appreciating and collecting inscription rubbing and good at creating calligraphy.The most important one of his collections is Song Ta's Preface of Holy Doctrine,among which he named the earliest one with sophisticated rubbing process as the Emperor Ink..Chongen developed a deep relationship with He Shaoji,Yin Shoupeng,Yang Yizeng and others in the same period because of this hobby.They often discussed calligraphy and book of inscription rubbing.As the crucial appreciator and collector of inscription rubbing in Qing Dynasty,Chongen is of profound knowledge in calligraphy.He eventually developed his own unique calligraphic style in the basis of his calligraphic study combined with Yan Zhenqing in his early years and Su Shi whom he studied further and then blended in his personality.Chongen can be considered as the representative of cultural elite of Manchu in Qing Dynasty.The previous studies were mainly focused on cultural elite circle formed by the literati of Han nationality,while the study on calligraphic culture of Manchu literati was relatively seldom for the lack of related information.The paper is aimed at having a overall understanding of Chongen and his calligraphy from the exploration of his biography,appreciation and collection of inscription rubbing and the study of calligraphic arts.
