A Study Of Translation Equivalence From The Perspectives Of Genre And Register

This thesis focuses on how to achieve translation equivalence through analyzing the two important concepts—genre and register in systemic functional linguistics.The main body of the thesis consists of four chapters:Chapter one gives a brief introduction of the two concepts — genre and register in SFL, and of their relationship with the text.Chapter two involves different definitions of translation equivalence in the field of translation.Chapter three elaborates why these two concepts must be analyzed simultaneously and how to achieve the genre-based and register-based translation equivalence. For genre-based translation equivalence, this chapter analyzes it from the following four aspects—context of culture, schematic structure, communicative purposes, and linguistic features. While for the register-based translation equivalence, the register variables—field, tenor and mode are taken into account.The comparison between two translations of one text is given in chapter four in order to prove that the two concepts of genre and register are applicable to translation equivalence.This thesis not only introduces two important concepts in SFL but also expands the two concepts, and on the basis of which, translation equivalence is delimited from a new perspective.
