Russia was going through a big social change in the 1860 s.Social politics economy and culture were all confronted with vast challenges.The country had acquired a plenty of advanced knowledge on technology and culture from western European,But it didn’t carry out democratic revolution as other western European countries did.In stead,the country still maintain its absolute monarchy and serfdom.But what’s wonder is that the two fields of this country : humanity art and natural science were sparkling unprecedented prosperity and flowing a large number of celebrities.But what’s pity,The stage of domestic music already had been the heaven of western European music.People treated it as a representation of social identity,consequently,they ignore Russian ethnic music their own.Under the tough situation the Mighty Handful was born.The musical league was following the step of Mikhail Glinka developing Russian ethnic music.The member of The Mighty Handful has double occupational identities and they took reviving Russian ethnic music as their mission,thus the league attract more attention in their time.The league shouldn’t be simply treated as a musical league organized by friendship instead of a social music phenomenon.Therefore,the thesis according to the constraints of social history and art researching The Mighty Handful and its music works,besides,the thesis research the value of league as well.
