The study on English teacher talk has gained great attention in foreign language research both at home and abroad with the focus on the effectiveness of English teacher talk.In fact,teacher talk is not only the basic and essential means in English teaching,but also the crucial source of target language input to students.Therefore,it is necessary to concentrate on the effectiveness of English teacher talk.Most previous researches at home and abroad mainly focus on the description of general features of English teacher talk,such as definitions,classifications,types,and functions of teacher talk,etc.while there are few studies on the effectiveness of English teacher talk in junior high schools.By means of class observation,recording,transcription and questionnaire,this paper aims to study the current situation of the effectiveness of English teacher talk in Wenhai Junior High school in terms of the language feature,language function and interactive feature so as to find out the major problems of English teacher talk and put forward effective ways of giving teacher talk.In addition,the study is taken as an opportunity to strength junior high school English teachers' awareness of English teacher talk and their reflections.In this way,they are expected to use teacher talk effectively in class and thus improving their teaching effects.To be specific,the research questions are as follows:(1)What's the main feature of the effectiveness of teacher talk in junior high school English classroom?(2)What are the major problems of English classroom teacher talk in junior high schools?(3)How do junior high school English teachers improve the effectiveness of their English classroom teacher talk?The results are as follows: On the basis of the overall analysis,features of the effectiveness of English classroom teacher talk are concluded in the study:authenticity,logicality,normalization,repeatability,interaction,and feedback function.In English classroom teaching,there still exists low quality English teacher talk,including the class with simple situation,the lack of authentic teaching materials,simple teachers' feedback,the insufficient guidable evaluation of teachers,the shortage of communicative strategies and the deficiency of interaction between teachers and students.Moreover,some suggestions are put forward to improve the effectiveness of English classroom teacher talk as follows: first,to well-organize teacher talk,and strive to improve the intelligibility of English teacher talk;secondly,to well-design classroom questions to enhance the openness of classroom questioning;thirdly,to provide with a variety of learning methods and learning resources,so as to stimulate students to build their new knowledge system actively;fourthly,to change their roles of teaching and further improve their professional competence.
