Professor Zhu Hong is both the first female literary critic and a famous translator in contemporary China. Her translations include: The Chinese Western: Short Fiction from Today's China,The Serenity of Whiteness: Stories by and about Women in Contemporary China,The Stubborn Porridge and Other Stories and A Frolic in the Snow. The Serenity of Whiteness is one of her important selections of translation, containing eleven works from nine different female writers.Apart from some famous writers like Zong Pu,there are also some marginal writers.Although these writers from different regions have different writing styles, their works in this anthology are all about the tragic life and circumstances of Chinese women in the 1980 s.In recent years, most studies of Zhu Hong's translation use the feminist translation theory and focus on the same works created by Zhu Hong. Her translation anthology has not been studied from the perspective of Skopostheorie,so this thesis is an effort in that direction.Skopostheorie is the core theory of German functionalist approaches, which was developed by Hans J.Vermeer.Different from equivalence theory,Skopostheorie focuses on translation as a purposeful activity of human beings.Vermeer believes that what determines the target text is not the equivalence between the source text and the target text but the purpose of the translator, the relation between the target text and the target readers and the relation between the source text and the target text, which are the three rules of Skopostheorie—Skopos rule, the intratextual coherence and the intertextual coherence.By analyzing the translation strategies and methods Zhu Hong adopted in her translation of The Serenity of Whiteness from the perspective of the three rules of Skopostheorie, this thesis has found that Professor Zhu Hong mainly uses the following strategies: literal translation and free translation, and the following methods: addition, annotation, omission, adjusting word orders and voice conversion. This thesis is divided into seven chapters.Chapter One is an introduction to the whole thesis.Chapter Two presents the studies of Zhu Hong's translation at home and abroad.Chapter Three is the theoretical framework which gives a brief introduction to Skopostheorie and illustrates the three rules of Skopostheorie.Chapter Four is an analysis of Zhu Hong's translation from the perspective of Skopos rule.Chapter Five is an analysis of Zhu Hong's translation from the perspective of intratextual rule.Chapter Six is an analysis of Zhu Hong's translation from the perspective of intertextual rule.Chapter Seven serves as the conclusion part. This thesis presents a new perspective to the study of Zhu Hong but still has some limitations, which are my starting point for future research on Zhu Hong's translations.
