Since 1960 s,CBI has been proved effective in second language teaching abroad and at home.Its advantages lie in its contribution not only to the development of students' academic level and cognitive ability,but also to the acceleration of their language ability.CBI asserts that language is a crucial medium to acquire knowledge—learners should learn a second language by using it.In addition to that,some research at home has also proved the effectiveness of CBI in promoting language learners' motivation and lowering their anxiety.However,there are barely few studies on how CBI affects college students' affective factors in English learning.This study aims to investigate the influence of CBI on vocational college English learners' motivation,anxiety and self-esteem.Research subjects,161 sophomores of non-English major from Xianning Vocational Technical College,are divided into a treatment group and a control group.During one-year's experiment,students in the control group are taught under the traditional methodology,while students in the treatment group are exposed to CBI model.Students in the treatment group are divided into three English proficiency group—high,medium and low according to their performance in College English Test before the research.In order to investigate differences and variation from the aspect of motivation,anxiety and self-esteem between-group and within-group,all the subjects are required to fill in the questionnaire for three times in the year.Research data is processed by the software SPSS.The results demonstrate that students in CBI context show stronger motivation and lower anxiety in English learning than those in the regular English class.And according to the comparison within subgroups,learners with high and medium English proficiency enhance motivation and lower anxiety to a larger extent than learners with low English proficiency.However,self-esteem of the low proficiency group is developed the fastest.All in all,CBI has positive impact in improving vocational college English learners' motivation,lowering their anxiety,and strengthening their self-esteem.So it's effective to apply CBI to English teaching in vocational and technical college.
