A Report Of Legal Translation Based On Nida’s Translation Process Model

With the acceleration of China’s opening-up,the advancement of China’s legal system and the growing demand for legal translation,the emerging field of legal translation studies attracts more and more domestic scholars’ attention.Based on the translation of legal texts,this report expounds the guiding theory of legal translation,reviews and summarizes the problems encountered in translation,and puts forward the translation strategy according to the author’s own translation study and practice.Legal document determines the rights and obligations of the parties,which must be clear and unambiguous,thus the wording and syntax of the legal documents have distinct characteristics which causes difficulties to the translator.Based on Nida’s translation process model and combined with examples of economic legal text translation,this report analyzes the surface elements and deep elements of legal English from sentence and text level and focuses on the translation strategy of “analysis-transfer-restructuring” to explore the translation process of legal English sentences and texts.This report applies Nida’s translation process model to decompose the whole translation process in detail and provides more operational methods,including forward restructuring,backward restructuring and split restructuring,to achieve the equivalence between the source and the target text,so as to minimize the errors in translation,to improve the speed and quality of translation,and to provide positive guidance for the translation of legal documents in the future.
