There are so many studies about verb-noun heterosemy in Modern Chinese, but the determining criterion of verb-noun heterosemy is relatively weak.So we take the First Class Vocabulary listed in Outline of the Graded Vocabulary for HSK as the main research object, investigating the overlap of verb and noun in Modern Chinese. The first chapter is introduction. In the three respects of Chinese verb and noun multi-class words,English verb and noun multi-class words and the contrast between English and Chinese verbs and nouns,we summarize the results of previous research to clarify the research methods, the aim and meaning, data resources of this study. The second chapter is to analyze the three typical treatment strategies about the overlap of verb and noun in Modern Chinese, respectively are artificial constraint to the multi-class words' number, verbs classifying as nouns,no constraint to the multi-class words' number.During the analyzation we refer to the strategy of multi-class in Modern English,as well as the language facts of Modern Chinese and English. It proves that the existing treatment strategies have certain questions. So we need to explore again. The third chapter is to investigate the overlap of verb and noun in Modern Chinese according to our expedition.During our expedition,we take advantage of the Grade A words in Chinese Language Level Vocabulary and Outline of Chinese Characters(Revised Edition)as a survey vocabulary. After eliminating the homonym phenomenon,we get 1,099 words totally. In virtue of this vocabulary,we investigate verbs and nouns' POS tagging situation in Modern Chinese Dictionary(7th Edition)and The standard dictionary of modern Chinese(3rd Edition),combining with National Language Committee Modern Chinese Corpus, then we count the proportion of verb-noun overlap is 3.37%.The forth chapter is to identify the overlap of verb and noun in Modern Chinese by using syntactic combination function as the standard. After confirming objects and standard,we divide the objects into words with the characteristics of verbs and noun combinations at the same time, words that only have verb combination characteristics but do not have noun combination characteristics. We count the proportion of verb-noun overlap is 9.01%.The fifth chapter is the theoretical reflections of verb-noun heterosemy.Firstly,we use Langacker's Side Highlight theory to prove that verbs and nouns are closely related in semantics. Then according to theories of Chomsky et al,we demonstrate that the problem of verbs and nouns is essentially a grammatical problem. Finally by using the materials of Russian and Japanese, the difficulty in verifying the overlap of verb and noun in modern Chinese is that Chinese verbs and other substantives lack morphological changes, especially morphological changes. At the same time,Chinese syntactic allows verbs to act as subjects and objects.Chapter six is the conclusion, which summarizes the value and deficiency of this paper. The main point of this paper is that we cannot artificially restrict the overlap of verb and noun, but according to language facts. Therefore,it is necessary to determine whether the part of speech is a verb,a noun,verb-noun overlap, based on the syntactic characteristics of the combination, instead of judging from the position of the subject and the object.
