| This report is based on the translator’s translation practice. The material translated comes from a series of articles in the magazine Technology Review published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology,These articles introduce the exploiting and utilizing of renewable energies and storing technology in Europe, especially in Germany as well as the possible effects of Energiewende on the development of energy and economy in Germany,Europe and even the whole world. With the acceleration of energy crisis and environmental pollution, the development of renewable energies has become a global concern, and translating of relevant documents is of vital importance in the exchange of information and technology among countries. The source text is of the informative type, objective, neutral and authentic, mainly concerning with Germany’s progress in power generation from renewable sources, particularly the wind source by adopting turbines, power management, transportation, cut of green-house gas emission, difficulties in technology, threats posed by the Energiewende on people’s jobs and life.To demonstrate the situation, the author gives facts, figures, sector diagrams and line charts, and uses large quantity of technical terms, long and complex sentences, reversions, passive voice,etc..Meanwhile,the language is poetic and of rich imagination, making the article intriguing and bear the features of an expressive text.In the process of translation, the translator studied carefully Peter Newmark’s Text Typology and Translation theories, and considering the characteristics of the source text, chose to apply communicative translation method mainly with semantic translation supplementing.Due to the large number of terminology, passive sentences and nominalization structures, related techniques such as conversion,omission,splitting-off and restructuring are employed. While stressing the meaning of the original text, the translator strives for getting close to the code of the target language and transmission of the message correctly. The translator summarizes the major findings in the experience, problems that still need to be solved and suggestions for future translation practice, understanding more deeply that Newmark’s semantic translation emphasizes the source text and the author while communicative translation keeps a watchful eye on the authenticity of the source text and TT’s readers, yet both have limitations. The combination of these two makes the translation accurate with consideration of features of both languages.Through this translation practice, the translator realizes the guiding significance of Newmark’s translation theories in high-quality translation of sci-tech texts and also the newest trend of utilizing clean and renewable energies. |
