Vocabulary is one of the basic elements of language,which is important for human language learning and communication.However,nowadays,the current and real situation of English vocabulary teaching in high school is far from satisfaction.Most English teachers teach vocabulary by asking students to read after them,explaining the meaning of the words,giving examples and making sentences,which ignores the deep processing of words,makes students' vocabulary learning methods plain and simple,also makes vocabulary teaching and learning time-consuming and inefficient.Therefore,it is helpful for students to improve the efficiency of vocabulary learning by using various teaching strategies to carry out vocabulary teaching and guide students to understand vocabulary deeply.The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of the application of elaborative strategies in English vocabulary teaching in high school,and to answer these three questions:(1)How can teachers use elaborative strategies to teach vocabulary?(2)Can students' vocabulary be improved by using elaborative strategies in English vocabulary teaching?(3)Can students' English scores be improved by using elaborative strategies in English vocabulary teaching?In order to answer the above questions,the author conducted a 12-week study,and chose two classes from Yunnan experimental school which is an affiliated school of Peking University as the experimental class and the control class with 44 people in each class.During the explanation of the words in New Senior English for China Student's Book 1,the teacher applied elaborative strategies to teach vocabulary in experimental class.The general process is that the teacher used advanced organizer to guide students to preview,used associative strategy to guide students to learn,and used notebook strategy to help students to review vocabulary.During the training,the experiment data was collected through English tests,questionnaires,observation and interview,and SPSS 19.0 was used for analysis.The results of the research show that students' scores of the vocabulary test and the comprehensive test in experimental class are significantly higher than that in control class.Besides,from the questionnaire and interview,students become more confident and interested in learning vocabulary.So the author draws the conclusion that the elaborative strategies is effective in vocabulary teaching,which can help students improve their vocabulary and English scores.
