As the international language,English plays an important role in the international communication.Clear and intelligible speech is the basis for communication,which affects the expression of meaning.Phonetics can be divided into vowels and consonants,in which vowels,as the core and backbone,are the basis of pronunciation.Monophthongs are the basic vowels in one language.However,because of the abstract manner of articulation,such as the openess of lips and the position of tongue and so on,it is not an easy job to acquire the standard articulation of the monophthongs.The study of the teaching of monopgthongs at home and abroad mainly focus on the contrast of English and Chinese vowels,the mechanism of second language acquisition,negative transfer of mother tongue,and interlingual research.Through the comparison between English and Chinese vowels,many scholars have found the similarities and differences between the two,and pointed out the gist of articulation,which helps and enlightens the Chinese English learners.However,the way of pronunciation and correctness of vowels is only by subjective perception,not objective enough.In view of the current problems of English phonetics teaching and enlightment of multimodal discourse theory,there are many researchers at home and abroad dedicated to the research and development and application of voice visualization softwar.Praat is the most widely used now.At present,many scholars have studied the Praat software,and used it to assist the phonetic teaching of English supra-segment,which has achieved good teaching effect.Based on the contrastive analysis hypothesis,speech learning model,multimodal discourse theory as the main guiding theories,the author have further studied the effectiveness of Praat assisting phonetic teaching by using the exsiting pronunciation gist of monothophongs,aiming to optimize the English pronunciation teaching effect and help the Chinese English learners acquire better pronuciation.In this study,60 students of a certain high school in zhenjiang were divided into experimental classand control class for a three-month experiment.By analyzing the experimental data,there are following findings.Except /(?):/,the intelligibility rate of monophthongs is above 70%,which indicates the overall acquisition of monophthongs is not very bad./u/?/3:/?/i:/ are the best acquired monophthongs among Chinese English learners and /e/?/(?)/?/(?):/ are the worst three.By the distribution pattern of English monophthongs by CELs,the back vowel/u/?central vowel/3:/ by CELs are significantly similar to RP.Though not so good as /u/ and /3:/,the pronunciation of front vowel by CELs is also acceptable.However,the left eight monophthongs by CELs all presents great problems compared with RP.Through three months of teaching,the pronunciation of monophthongs in the experimental class has significantly improved and the learning effect is much better than the control class.This experiment has proved the effectiveness of Praat assiting monophthongs teaching based on the contrast between English and Chinese monophthongs,which shows that CELs is capble of acquiring the standard English monophthong pronunciation if appropriate teaching method is conducted.Also it has a guiding significance for the current English phonetics teaching.First of all,it is necessary to make full use of the phenomenon of mother tongue transfer.Secondly,phonetic teaching should be throughout the whole English teaching process.Thirdly,English teachers should constantly improve their professional quality.Finally,it is necessary to develop and utilize education technology to assist English phonetic teaching.
