Vocabulary plays a pivotal role in English learning.The primary school phase is a crucial period for English learning.For elementary students who are the beginners of second language learning,vocabulary learning is an important part of English learning.The research methods used in this paper include questionnaire,classroom observation and interview,guided by constructivist learning theory,situated cognitive theory,and Krashen's input hypothesis.In this study,178 students and 5 teachers from Xi'an High-tech International School are selected as the research subjects.This paper mainly studies the use of vocabulary presentation modes in primary school vocabulary teaching,the most frequently used vocabulary presentation mode,the causes for teachers to use it in the classroom,and the problems encountered by teachers in using these vocabulary presentation modes.178 questionnaires are first distributed to students and 170 questionnaires are valid.From analyzing the questionnaires,the overall situation of vocabulary presentation was generally understood;After understanding the general situation,a classroom observation which lasts more than three months was performed in the fifth grade.The main purpose of the observation is to observe the vocabulary presentation modes used by the teacher when teaching the new knowledge and the student's reaction to this situation.At the final part,some teachers and students are interviewed to understand the main vocabulary presentation modes used by teachers in the classroom and the vocabulary presentation modes that students prefer.This thesis focuses on the current situation of the application of description presentation mode,perceptual presentation mode,context presentation mode,and word list presentation mode in classrooms.It also analyzes the causes of teachers' choice of specific vocabulary presentation mode and some problems they encounter when using these vocabulary presentation modes.Based on the results of the research,the author proves that perception presentation mode is the most frequently used in primary school English vocabulary teaching.The other frequently mode used by the teacher is context presentation mode,while the description presentation mode and word list presentation mode are less used in primary English vocabulary presentation.The author makes further analysis of the main reasons why the teacher choose one of the specific vocabulary presentation mode.Finally,the author gives some suggestions on using these presentation modes in primary English classes.
