To develop students' ability to communicate and cooperate with others is a new requirement of the progress and development of the new times for education. With the implementation and advancement of “new curriculum standard”,most English classes in schools have introduced and applied the teaching mode of cooperative learning, but there are still some undesirables to be taken care of.In the present study, the author conducts a survey by questionnaires and interviews with the purpose to investigate and analyze the effects of cooperative learning on classroom climate(teacher-student relationship and peer relationship),middle school students' learning motivation and participation in class activities. The results are discussed mainly in light of the social interdependence theory and humanistic teaching theory, and discover that(1)cooperative learning offers more opportunities for both teacher-student and peer interaction and communication, for friendly and harmonious classroom atmosphere is established with the emotional distance narrowing;(2)cooperative learning is conducive to improve students' motivation for learning. In cooperative learning, students' interest and self-confidence in learning English have been significantly improved;(3)in cooperative learning, students are found to participate actively in English learning activities, though students can be grouped in a more desirable way to ensure that students have equal chances of participation.
