English is one of the most widely-used international languages in the world today.The English subject accounts for a large proportion of the total score in the entrance examination for senior middle school and the entrance examination for university.The requirement to a talented person is not only the knowledge,but also the consciousness of cooperation ability.To cooperate with others is an important quality to adapt to the new society.But many students are the only child in their family.They are unsociable.They are not good at communicating with others.Therefore,it's necessary to gradually foster students' sense of cooperation by “cooperative learning”,cultivate their cooperative spirit by active guidance and providing the chance for promoting cooperation and exchanges.“Learn to learn,learn to cooperate,learn to survive” has become the theme of education.Junior high school is an important stage for the formation of teenagers' character,and also the best part for students to learn.Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(2011 Edition)rises:“Teachers should guide students to cooperate with others,help each other and complete teaching tasks together in group activities.Cooperative learning is an effective teaching method,which is recognized and used by teachers.Thisresearch intends to apply the cooperative learning method to junior middle school students to explore whether group cooperative learning method can change students' English learning attitude and have a positive impact on their English performance.This research proposes two questions:1.Can the application of cooperative learning improve the low achievers' English grades?2.Can the application of cooperative learning improve the low achievers' English learning interest and confidence in English learning?On the basis of studying related researches,the researcher designs to apply cooperative learning teaching method to the students in junior middle school.The students who participate in the experiment are 80 low achievers of Grade Three.The 80 students are divided into two classes equally.They are experimental class(EC)and common class(CC).Groups are set up in EC.The teacher leads students help each other,cooperate with each other,and complete a common goal together.The research adopts three instruments,tests,questionnaires and interview.Before the experiment,students take part in the pre-test and the pre-questionnaire.After the experiment,students take part in the post-test,the post-questionnaire and the interview.The researcher analyzes the dates which are got through SPSS(21.0).The result shows that the mean score of post-test in EC is 20.425 higher than pre-test.The mean score of post-test in EC is 70.87 while the mean score of it in CC is 51.66.The mean score of post-test in EC is 19.21 higher thanthat of CC.The result shows that cooperative learning has effective influence on low achievers.From the analysis,students' interest and confidence in EC increase a lot after the experiment.In the future,cooperative can be used in the classroom teaching further.Teachers can play a leading role and give the students the initiative.
