In recent years,the notion of learning engagement has been paid more attention than ever before.The degree of students’ English learning engagement has a great impact on their academic performance and future development.However,in China,researches on learning engagement are still in its infancy.This research investigated the current condition of junior high school students’ English learning engagement,and the correlation between English learning engagement and English achievement through questionnaire and interview.There are total 262 students and 6 teachers for all the three grades in a junior high school in Xi’an participate in the research.The results of this research show that the overall level of junior high students’ English learning engagement is above the average.And there is a significant difference in students’ English learning engagement in different grades.Specifically,the engagement level of Grade 7 students in behavior,emotion and cognition is significantly higher than that of Grade 8 and Grade 9 students.As for learning engagement conditions of different genders,there is no significant difference between male and female.In general,there is a significant positive correlation between junior high school students’ English learning engagement and their English achievement.Specifically,the correlation between emotional engagement and English achievement is the highest;correlation between behavioral engagement and English achievement is the second high;while the correlation between cognitive engagement and English achievement is the lowest.And behavioral engagement affect Grade 7 and Grade8 students’ English achievement to a large degree;emotional engagement and cognitive engagement have great impact on Grade 8 and Grade 9 students’ English achievement.Therefore,English teachers of junior high school should pay more attention to students’ learning engagement.For English teachers of higher grades in junior high school,they are expected to cultivate students’ affection of English as well as the ability of using appropriate cognitive learning method. |
