| English writing is an effective way to test a student’s English level, including vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, etc. And how to promote students’ English writing has been a hot topic in the field of second language learning.Numerous researchers have contributed their efforts to studies on the influence of teacher’s feedback on English writing. But till now, researchers still haven’t come to an agreement on whether teachers’ written feedback can improve students’ writing and which type is more beneficial.Compared with studies abroad, researches in China are few and most of them are limited to theoretical studies. What’s more, most researchers study college students or senior high school students, not junior high students. So it is necessary to make an empirical study. This paper investigated the effectiveness of teachers’ written feedback on junior high school English writing.Through empirical study, the author compared the effect of direct written feedback with that of indirect written feedback on English writing.Subjects of the research were 72 junior students from Anhui province.36 of the participants were from Class A and another 36 came from Class B.Class A and Class B were two parallel classes and were taught by the same teacher. The 36 students from two classes were grouped according to the English level: the higher level groups and the lower level groups.Participants of two classes were given two different feedbacks: direct written corrective feedback and indirect written corrective feedback. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks, during which students were required to complete five compositions assigned by their teacher.Except the pretest and the post test, students revised their first draft of each composition based on the teachers’ feedback. The research questions are as follow:(1)Are direct written feedback and indirect written feedback helpful to improveEnglish writing? If so,which one is more beneficial?(2)What are the differences between direct written feedback and indirect writtenfeedback for students at different levels?(3)Do direct feedback and indirect feedback have effects on the English writingcorrection in junior middle school? If so,what is the difference?Through the analysis of data, the major findings are as follows: firstly, both direct written feedback and indirect written feedback contribute to the improvement of English writing accuracy.Secondly, for the higher-level students, there is no obvious difference in term of the effects of two kinds of feedbacks on their English writing level;compared to higher-level students, direct feedback is much better for lower-level students.Thirdly, there are obvious differences between different feedbacks and their effects on students’ correction of errors. The direct written corrective feedback is more helpful in writing correction compared to indirect written corrective feedback. The research is aiming at the effects of different feedbacks on writing in junior middle school, which provides some help and ways to the writing instruction in junior middle school.... |
