| As a branch of scientific & technical text characterized by scientificity,literariness,popularity and interest,the language of popular science texts has a clear structure with its sentences tied together closely to which some varied cohesive devices are applied.As for their occurrence frequency,these cohesive devices exist in almost every sentence.Therefore to study the translation strategies for cohesive devices is not just an academic issue,it is more of a practical one.In the translation process,how to deal with these cohesive devices to maintain the style,language and logic of the source language text(SLT)in order to achieve equivalence in the target language text(TLT)and reduce as much as possible reading obstacles for readers has become a problem worth exploring.This practical report is based on part of the translation project of Geologica provided by Xi'an Zhongyiyutong Sci-Tech Co.,Ltd,which is mainly concerned with five aspects including animals,plants,climate,landform and super continent,etc.The part translated by the author is from page 392 to page 441.This translation project is not only featured by scientificity,literariness,popularity and interest but also by clear logic and compact structure.Besides,lots of cohesive devices are used in the text.Guided by Cohesion Theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan,the thesis is in an attempt to contrast similarities and dissimilarities of cohesive devices between Chinese and English popular science texts,to summarize concrete difficulties in terms of reference cohesion,substitution cohesion,ellipsis cohesion,conjunction cohesion as well as lexical cohesion,and to suggest some suitable translation strategies for those five kinds of cohesion.Then the author points out that Cohesion Theory is applicable to guide the E-C translation of popular science texts,aiming to help translators to further improve the quality of popular science translation and enriching related translation studies done by previous scholars. |
