Contemporary British female novelist Victoria Hislop is good at depicting the fate of ordinary people in a grand historical context.Her stories always convey a touch of warmth and hope in despair.The island,a novel that has touched millions of readers,tells a story about leper patients.It is rich in literary and cultural connotation.It has an important theme of "disease and literature".This paper is based on the island's image,which discusses the novel hierarchically from the perspectives of the social and cultural connotation of island literature,"disease and literature" interdisciplinary theme,and the humanities and social cultural care.The introduction part reviews Victoria Hislop's life,writing style,and her major works.In addition,this part also sorts out Hislop's research at home and abroad.The first chapter focuses on the socio-cultural connotation of the island literature,and makes a macroscopic analysis of the "island literature" in the field of world literature,exploring the image and connotation of the island.At the same time,it analyzes the literary and cultural implication of the Spinalonga,which has its unique implication as the separation zone of leprosy.The novel has a certain significance to the inheritance and development of island literature.The second chapter discusses the interdisciplinary issue of "disease and literature".Spinalonga is closely related to disease,and has the theme of "disease and literature",which is of great significance in interdisciplinary research.Leprosy,as an ancient infectious disease,is also a metaphorical disease.This chapter focuses on text analysis,and discusses which one is the healthy world and who is the real patient through the comparison between the two different worlds in the novel.The leprosy patients on the island live a healthy life,they build the island into a civilized,harmonious society,but the world outside the island is full of war,killing,jealousy and betrayal.The third chapter mainly analyzes the aesthetic significance of humanistic concern and social cultural care conveyed by the works.The Spinalonga once is a dead zone in the eyes of outsiders.But the positive optimism of the islanders is a reminder of theblossoming of love in this desolate and ominous place,which gives Alexis spirit strength.Leprosy,as a metaphorical disease,causes the affected person to suffer more than physical harm.Through the novel,the author reveals the plight of leprosy patients' life,and urges people to eliminate prejudice against leprosy patients and care for leprosy patients.In addition,the novel expresses the concern of healthy people with mental illness.The epilogue deems that the island in the novel has the unique literary and cultural connotation.The study of the novel The Island reflects the multiple meanings of the world literature history study,interdisciplinary and social culture.
