On The Creative Treason In The English Version Of Lao CAN You Ji From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

As a representative traditional literary novel in the late of Qing Dynasty,Lao Can You Ji has attracted lots of translators abroad and at home to translate it because of its unique linguistic characteristics and rich cultural elements.Domestic scholars mainly study on the English version of the novel from the aspects of linguistic characteristics,cultural elements,cultural-loaded words and translator's subjectivity by making comparative study between Shadick's version and the Yangs' version.However,the research on the creative treason in the translation of Lao Can You Ji is barely conducted.Furthermore,there is no one applying Adaptation Theory to study on the creative treason in the English version of it.The present thesis aims to investigate the phenomena of creative treason in the English version of Lao Can You Ji which was rendered by Yang Xianyi and Gladys from the perspective of Adaptation Theory.Research method of case study is adopted to analyze how translators make adaptation to the correlates of linguistic structure and communicative context by the means of creative treason.The findings drawn from analysis indicate that creative treason indeed exists at the level of linguistic structure and cultural context of the Yangs' version.Mistranslation,omitted translation and individualized translation were mainly used in the process of adapting to correlates of the two levels.It can make translated work become much easier for target readers.Target readers' reading habits can be met as well.In addition,translators' purpose of introducing this classic Chinese novel to western countries,spreading Chinese culture to the world can be achieved.This thesis initially applies Adaptation Theory to the phenomena of creative treason in English version of Lao Can You Ji.It could be a guide for related research on creative treason or variant translation in the translation of traditional novels.It could also broaden the research range of pragmatic translation.Besides,this thesis could provide the act of translating classic Chinese literary works with feasible translation strategies and translation methods.Then unique features and cultural elements contained in classic Chinese novel could be manipulated efficiently and Chinese culture could be disseminated better.
