An Analysis Of English Loanwords In Chinese In The 21^st Century

Loanword borrowing is an important linguistic phenomenon.It is the outcome of language contact and culture contact.The analysis of English loanwords in Chinese in the 21~stt century is of significance to the research on Chinese vocabulary system,and it is also conducive to the further knowledge of the contact between Chinese and English.Although wonderful achievements have been made on the study of loanwords,there has been little research on the analysis of loanwords in the concrete fields.Based on the statistics and analyses of the English loanwords in Chinese from New Words Books,this thesis makes a research on the English loanwords in Chinese in the 21~stt century at the macro and micro level.According to the Loanword Social Theory and Loanwords Interference Theory,the classification standard of English loanwords is divided into five types:phonetic loans,semantic loans,hybrids,loan blends and letter words.To make the distribution and changes of loanwords more clearly,the thesis selects three valuable comparison objects:Shi Youwei(loanwords before 1978),Lu Haibin(loanwords from 1978 to 2000)and Zhong Jiya(loanwords before 2002).The study of specific fields focuses on the changes of borrowing types of loanwords from2001 to 2016.According to the research results,in the borrowing types,the number of phonetic words decreases and the number of semantic loans and letter words increases.In the part of speech,loanwords have been mainly maintained in the nouns.It also adopted some verbs and adjectives.In the number of syllables,three syllables words have maintained first place all the time.The followings are words in two syllables and four syllables.In the distribution of loanword in different fields,the top four fields include life,technology,art and PE and economy.Both in the economic and technological field,the top three borrowing types of loanwords are letter loans,phonetic loans and semantic loans.In the life field,the proportion of letter loans is the largest,which is followed by phonetic loans and loan blends.In the art and PE field,the top two categories are letter loans and phonetic loans.In a word,the top two borrowing types of loanwords in the four fields are letter loans and phonetic loans.English loanwords have four functions:linguistic function,cultural function,societal function,psychological function.They have significant influences on China in many aspects.
