The Transference Of English Loanwords In Chinese Atmosphere Based On Language Contact

Language wouldn’t have developed as a separate entity without the influence of the other language, which is closely interrelated with each other. Looking back to the long human history, such activities as trade, cultural communication, the war, colonial domination, immigration, etc can more or less bring about the contact between different groups, in the process of which language contact is bound to be occurring as well. As for language contact, it abounds in a great variety, among which lexical borrowing counts most under the influence of language contact between different societies, thus forming language contact of different degrees. Where borrowing words are needed, they will be flooded into Chinese like a wave of seawater, which is the reflection of where history goes. Meanwhile, nothing can stop it from advancing. At the turning of the new century, with the deepening of reform and opening up and the approaching of science and information age, TV and internet are increasingly connected with our daily life, which means China is already entering into the Information Age, enabling the new words to spread more conveniently and more rapidly, simultaneously enriching the original language by the input of huge amounts of newly-birth words and borrowing words.Language contact will be employed as the theoretical basis in this thesis, illustrating the specific language variants of English loanwords under the influence of Chinese, thus revealing the influence brought about by English loanwords for the Chinese in different aspects. The background, purpose and significance of the research will be discussed in the first chapter; looking back into the three main phases of language contacts and the previous research on loanwords will be discussed in the second chapter; language contact and related theories will be discussed in the third chapter; the influence of English loanwords on Chinese will be discussed in the fourth chapter; the attitudes towards English loanwords will be discussed in the fifth chapter; collusion will be reached in the last chapter.In all, language contact will necessarily cause a certain influence on the target language, but meanwhile it can enlarge the vocabulary of the language in a large number, serving as a key path for the improvement and development of the language. However, lexical borrowing should abide by a regulation and a certain extent so as to lessen the negative influence on the borrowed words.
