Hilary Mantel is the best-selling novelist in contemporary Britain. After she won the Man Booker Prize with her history novel Wolf Hall for the first time in 2009,she won the same prize again with Wolf Hall's sequel Bring Up the Bodies in 2012.Thus,Mantel is the first British female writer who has won the same prize again for the same work's sequel.Hence, she is regarded as one of the most distinguished contemporary British novelists.Bring Up the Bodies, based on the history of the Tudor Dynasty, creatively chooses Thomas Cromwell as the hero to describe a complex and bloody court struggle of the Tudor Dynasty: Cromwell cleverly pulled down the Boleyn's,and sent Queen Anne Boleyn to the guillotine. This thesis adopts text analysis to analyze Thomas Cromwell's individuation process based on individuation of Jungian analytical psychology and explore how to realize the individuation of him.Through the specific analysis of Cromwell's complex which is the beginning of individuation process and the other three important stages of persona, shadow and anima, and the goal of individuation that is self, this thesis analyzes how Cromwell uses consciousness to explore his unconscious in order to coordinate the conflict between the different stages, eliminate the conflicts among them and finally integrate them into a harmonious whole which is the successful individuation that is recognizing, accepting the true self and realizing the harmonious coexistence of the unconscious and consciousness, hence achieves the success of individuation. In other words, this thesis is to survey Cromwell's individuation process and provides that one can become the definite, unique being he in fact is,by fulfilling the peculiarity of one's nature.Through the interpretation of Cromwell's individuation process, the thesis strive to prove that only through consciously exploring our ownunconscious, can one become the definite, unique being he in fact is.Or by fulfilling the peculiarity of one's nature, can one transform the unconscious complex, persona, shadow, anima or animus into consciousness. It means that people should gradually be able to consciously turn the unconscious, irrational factors into consciousness or integrateconsciousness and unconscious into a whole personality.Only so can people make ourselves in a harmonious and balanced state.Through expounding Cromwell's individuation process, readers can get a better understanding of his psychological development and have a more comprehensive knowledge about him.Meanwhile, this thesis not only provides a different perspective for the research of this novel, but also is of great referential significance for contemporary people to achieve their spiritual salvation and growth.
