Of Human Bondage is a semi-autobiographical novel written by William Somerset Maugham,a famous British writer in the 19th century. And it is regarded as "one of the most successful novels written in English".This novel is mainly about the growth of the protagonist,Philip Carey.Based on his own experience,Maugham vividly described Philip's miserable childhood, the struggling teenager years and the gloomy adulthood.Based on Jungian archetypal theory, this thesis focuses on the constraints of Philip's early life, such as his family life, social life and emotional life, and how Philip finally goes out of the bondage to face the new life and achieve his self salvation. The main body of this thesis consists of four chapters.Chapter 1 explores Philip's family life using "persona" and "shadow".The projection of persona and shadow leads to Philip's lack of sense of belonging in family life;Chapter 2 studies the reasons why Philip is bounded by social life through the analysis of the interaction of "persona"and "shadow",which causes his alienation between others;Chapter 3 studies Philip's emotional life and why he can't go out the bondage of love through the archetype of "anima".And this chapter uses four stages of anima to analyze why Philip are attracted by those four women;Chapter 4 analyzes how Philip finally goes out the bondage of religion and emotion, find his identity and achieve his self redemption under"self".Through the analysis of the archetypes in Philip's social life, family life and emotional life in Of Human Bondage, the paper argues that human beings must break the bondage in their nature, reshape their identity, and find the significance in life, and achieve their redemption.
