Since Khan Academy spread all over the world in 2011,flipped classroom(FC)mode were introduced to Chinese educators and researches were conducted and trying of FC practice occurred in China.Meanwhile, with the implementation of reforming and opening policy and globalization more and more people have realized the importance of learning English.Children start to learn it at an early age. However, words reading and spelling is an obstacle for most Chinese students in learning English.Without help of teachers and tapes,it's hard for them to read and spell words correctly when they learn English by themselves. The reason for these difficulties is the lacking of letter-sound correspondences knowledge and rules for reading and spelling.Phonics is the knowledge about letter-sound correspondence relationships which can help students get rid of dependence of teachers when they read and memorize words, and furthermore, improve the efficiency of English vocabulary learning.Because of the shortage of limited English learning periods and the lack of systematical phonics training for teachers,it isn't widely spread and used in Chinese primary English education. The existence of English training schools offsets both the shortages. Therefore,a training school which has systematical online courses supported by APTECH in Beijing and applies FC mode to phonics teaching in daily teaching was taken as the case for this study. The research aims to explore how applying FC mode to phonics teaching improve primary school students' phonological awareness(PA),word reading ability and spelling ability, and cultivate student's learning interest and improve their English vocabulary learning efficiency. The study takes 6 grade 3-4 pupils as the research subjects to conduct a three-month phonics instruction.Students are required to spend 20-30 minutes learning online course for five days and participate in one face-to-face class a week.Tests, interviews and observation are the instruments and data is collected and analyzed. The findings show that 1)applying FC mode to phonics teaching can improve primary school students' PA;2)applying FC mode to phonics teaching can improve pupils' word reading and spelling ability;3)after applying FC mode to phonics training, students cultivate the habit of spending some time in learning English every day,and their interest in English learning improves,at the same time they remember words by their sounds or syllables,or just remember the sound and spell out the words according to the rules, which greatly improve the efficiency of remembering words. The present study has important implications for both teachers and learners.First,to improve students' PA,teachers should design a variety of colorful activities to stimulate students when teaching phonics.Second, for improving students' word reading ability and word spelling, teachers need to use different kinds of materials to arise students' various senses in learning phonics. At last, cultivating learning interest needs long time persistence, which requires the cooperation of student, parents and teacher.
