Students in our country start learning English at primary school. The initial learning of English will have a very important impact on students' English learning through their lifetime.Vocabulary as a vital part of English learning,in order to learn English well, students must master English vocabularies well. However, the current primary school English vocabulary teaching basically adopts the traditional vocabulary teaching method. This method pays attention to mechanical imitation and rote memorization, but ignores the relationship between the sound and the letter of English words as phonetic characters. As a result, the pronunciation and spelling of words become burdens on students' vocabulary learning, greatly affecting students' interests in English learning.Numerous studies have proved that Phonics is an effective tool for children in English-speaking countries to learn English. However, the application of Phonics in English vocabulary teaching in primary school in China is inadequate.Based on the background mentioned above, the researcher tries to apply the Phonics to the English vocabulary teaching in primary school, and explore the following problems through teaching experiments:1)Can Phonics effectively improve primary school students' word reading ability?2)Can Phonics effectively improve primary school students' spelling ability?3)Can Phonics effectively stimulate primary school students' interests in English learning? This study was based on Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development,Lernerberg's Critical Period Hypothesis, and Krashen's Monitor Hypothesis. The researcher conducted an 18-week teaching study in Class 33(control group)and Class 34(experimental group)of Grade 3 from Affiliated School of Shanxi Agricultural University using vocabulary tests, questionnaires and interviews. The results of the word reading test and word spelling test showed that the average scores were significantly higher in experimental group than those in the control group while the standard deviations are lower. The results of the questionnaire and interview showed that the students in the experimental class are more interested in English learning. It is concluded that Phonics can effectively improve primary school students' English word reading and spelling ability. It can also stimulate their interests in English learning.Teachers can integrate Phonics in the classroom to help students' vocabulary learning and relevant experts or education departments can compile or introduce some suitable teaching materials to primary schools. In addition to providing more opportunities for primary school students to learn Phonics,it can promote teachers to explore more effective teaching strategies.
