A Study Of Yeh Chia-ying's Affection Of Homeland In Her Poems

Yeh Chia-ying's life is full of misery,at the same time,also full of poetry.In Jialing's Collected Essays on Poetry,she called her motherland “Homeland”,called Canada which is her nationality “Foreign Country”.She drifted between “homeland”and “foreign country”,formed the image of drifter.The main research object of this article focuses on Yeh Chia-ying's poetry,And from this,we have combed out the theme of “ Affection of Homeland ”,to express her view of the life thought the imageries of her poetry.The whole paper is divided into six parts to discuss:(1)The introduction is mainly about the research of Yeh Chia-ying.She integrates the identity of scholars,teachers and poets,the current research also starts from these three aspects:Study of Poetic Theory;Study of teaching methods;study of poetic creation.Then get this purpose and significance.(2)Define and explain the “Affection of Homeland”,This is the primary task and logical starting point of the thesis.Including the following three aspects:What is“Affection of Homeland”?Why did it happen?Three dimensions of “Affection of Homeland”.(3)Yeh Chia-ying experienced national enmity and family trouble during she studying at home.In her poems,the images of “dust”,“wind and rain”,and“slanting sun” symbolize the background of the times of war.The series of images of “moon”,“shadow”and “lamp” show the mental state of being lonely and despondent after a change.The images of “Autumn Butterfly ”,“Little Purple Chrysanthemum”,“cricket” and “cicada” shows concern for the weak life.The four elements covered in the concept of “state” are land,People,Sovereignty,and Government which damaged by external forces in varying degrees.This is the conceptof the country in a political sense.(4)When she drift overseas,she far from her motherland.She used the “Rootless Grass” to describe herself in poetry.And through series image such as “Poinciana”?“Frost”?“moon”.It contains the thoughts of relatives and the motherland.This is the concept of the country in a geographical sense.(5)Yeh Chia-ying had a deeper understanding of “Hometown”,“Rural roots”,and“Former township” after suffering.She expressed her lofty aspirations with the two images,use other images expression the desire to inherit the culture of classical poetry.This includes her admiration for the deceased,desire to inherit the tradition of poetry.This is the concept of the country in a cultural sense.(6)The conclusion part,by sorting out the theme of “Affection of Homeland” in her poems,through the above analysis we can explain the "Rural roots",to express her view of the life significance and the value of poetry.
