One faction takes a significant position in Japan, which has a high opinion of sentimental poetry of Takuboku and would like to worship him as a great romantic lyricist. The other faction, who is very discontented with the unpolitical reading of Takuboku, maintains that the image of revolutionary poet should be renewed. However, both of them haven't treated the Takuboku literature as an integer to analyze, and this result to the separation and conflict between literature and politics.This thesis approaches the subject of Takuboku's poetry from different angles. First it will try to make an inquiry into Takuboku's intention of writing and the topic potential meanings of the poetry which all about his hometown and Tokyo. The thesis notices that the Takuboku's imaginations of hometown and metropolis are always changed during the travel. Obviously, this cannot be simply explained to be sentimental and lyric. All the discussion will be established in the biography of Takuboku.Takuboku's'self-awakening'was actualized in the Romantic Movement in the middle time of Meiji. The dream of'big-poet'was established later and soon be integrated with the age spirit. The poet began to criticize the modern civilization drastically and soon became a rebel of the time. The late stage of Takuboku's poetry was mainly on social political criticism, but it can yet be regarded as lyric works. Not only in the word but also thought, Takuboku had grown up to an excellent revolutionary poet.The thesis will mainly adopt the method of close reading, but also the society and history scene will be narrated to help to present the full image of Takuboku.
