The academic circle has different opinions on the origin of confucian,which has four representative statements:confucian is from the Si Tu office or the historiographer;confucian originates in the warlock or the occupation.The definition of confucian is mostly scattered in the works of the ancient and the present.In short,the students who are taught by confucian or the imperial college,school and family,and receive the education of confucian thought are named confucian scholars.The literatis who are expert in confucianism and literature are called writer-confucianists.The writer-confucianist has gone through a process of implicit to explicit.Wang Chong formally proposed the appellation in the Eastern Han Dynasty,the writer-confucianist developed in the Southern and Northern Dynasty.In the Tang Dynasty,a more influential intellectual stratum was formed.Wang Bo and Lu Zhaolin were the representative poets in the early Tang Dynasty.They respected confucianism and had distinctive writer-confucianist characteristics.Wang Bo had great enthusiasm and the quality of the integrity,with inheriting the confucian spirit.Lu Zhaolin eagered to complete a grand work and pursued the quality of noble.In addition,he turned to writing in the old age.Zhang Jiuling and Tu Fu were very famous in the glorious age of Tang Dynasty.They were not only good at confucianism and literature but also practicing confucianism.Zhang Jiuling was a confucian scholar who was right-minded and loving people.In addition,he was adept at selecting the talented people for the court.Tu Fu aimed at the world.He was a merciful and loyal confucian scholar.Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan were the representative poets in the mid-Tang Dynasty.They were also very successful in confucianism.Han Yu pursued the quality of the righteousness and took confucius as an example to impart confucianism.Moreover,he was expert in dabating.Liu Zongyuan was a writer-confucianist who had the self-consciousness,not only had a heart of benevolence,but also recommended talented persons for court and taught students.He was well versed in research methods.Du Mu and Pi Rixiu enjoyed a high reputation in the late Tang Dynasty.They continued to revive the confucianism.Du Mu was loyal to the emperor and attached great importance to put what was learned into practice.He turned to writing in the old age.Although Pi Rixiu called himself a hermit,his eyes never really leave the court and the people.He not onlyaimed at the world,but also was interested in education.He paid attention to self-cultivation and emphasized the morality.
