We mainly explored the practice of looking in Shakespearean tragedies, concerning the characters' practice of looking, how it would influence the development of these tragedies, how it would shape the tragic world, how it makes these texts tragedies and how it would affect the relationship between readers and the texts. The main points of the paper as follows:The first chapter, which is titled “Perspective Isolation in the Tragic World”,mainly explored who is the subject of the practice of looking in Shakespearean tragic world.“Looking ” is always an individual practice in Shakespearean tragedies, everyone viewing the world on their own principle, which leads to isolation between their perspectives. The second chapter, which is titled “Typical Practice of looking of the Characters”,discussed four kinds of practice of looking that matter the most.First,“Perspective Anchorage” is the most basic type of the practice of looking, which is used by many characters to cope with meaning chaos. But perspective conflict would appear when everyone anchors meaning on their own perspective.Second,“Perspective Control” is the most direct way to deal with perspective conflict. In this situation, the one with a higher perspective can control the one with a lower perspective, not only in information but in actions, which means power being closely attached to this process.Third,“Perspective Appropriation” appears when someone wants to know more but already coming across their limited perspective boundaries, they have to appropriate a higher perspective of others.Fourth,“Perspective Wrestling” is the most intense and highest level of the practice of looking.Several perspectives get into a balance without any chance to persuade or conquer each other. This can happen between characters or inside one character if he has a restless soul.Characters get involved in this kind of practice of looking would have to wrestle their perspective system with each other or within himself to gain an advanced position. The third chapter, which is titled “God's Perspective in the Tragic Structure”,primarily explained why the practice of looking always get into trouble no matter what.We assume characters try to systemize the world with their practice of looking in order to get control of it.However, the system is impossible to make it flawless because of the invisible God implying in the texts, which means a broader perspective man can never ever get close. The fourth chapter, which is titled “The Practice of looking and Tragedy”,talked about whether the practice of looking in Shakespearean tragedies can be referred as tragic.During the process of these practice of looking, the value of the characters would be eventually doomed in three phases which are division, collision and destruction. In that sense, practice of looking itself is tragic and the practice of looking in Shakespearean tragedies can be viewed as tragic. The fifth chapter, which is titled “Readers and the Practice of Looking”,used “The Panopticon Prison” as a metaphor to analyse the specific relationship between readers and Shakespearean tragedies. The practice of looking of the characters in the texts would influence that of the readers.Lastly,we reflect on the practice of looking itself and how it works nowadays.
