The National English Curriculum Standards(2017)aims to cultivate and develop students' key competencies such as language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning competence.In addition,it puts more emphasis on the cultivation of students' thinking qualities.Meanwhile,English reading classes play an important role in the cultivation of students' thinking qualities.The reading classes can not only help students understand the language and information,but also facilitate students' in-depth comprehension of reading.That is to say,students can develop their thinking qualities by understanding the contents of reading texts,analyzing,synthesizing and evaluating writers' opinions and emotions.Therefore,teachers need to make full use of questioning skills in classes and guide students to develop their thinking from low-level to high-level in order to fulfill this goal.The author investigated the teachers' questioning skills in reading classes during the author's internship at Bachuan New Senior High School in Chongqing.Three English teachers and ninety-two students from Grade One in this school got involved in the research.The author conducted a classroom observation of the three teachers first and recorded the types and frequency of questions they asked in reading classes and interviewed them after class.In addition,the author adopted the questionnaire to the students involved in the research so as to investigate their feedbacks to teachers' questioning skills.Then the author found some problems in teachers' questioning skills in reading classes and put forward reasonable and feasible solutions to the problems.The research questions are as follows:1.What types of questions are mainly asked by teachers in English reading classes?2.What impacts do teachers' questioning skills make on students' thinking qualities in English reading classes?The author analyzed the data collected in the research and summarized the findings of it.The findings are summarized in the following:1.The findings of the research indicated that display questions are mainly asked in senior high school English reading classes.2.Teachers' questioning skills can facilitate students' thinking qualities such as abilities of observation and comparison,analysis and inference.However,there are some inevitable limitations in the research due to the author's short internship.Therefore,the author expects other researchers to find out more accurate results in further researches.
