The rapid development of globalization has promoted the industrial exchanges among countries and regions and called for a growing need for interpreters.Rising status of the interpreter can be seen at the same time. Before the emergence of liaison interpreting, when conference interpreting took up the majority, the role of the interpreter was often regarded as a translation machine and was often compared to a "conduit"(Reddy,1979)and the "faithful echo".The importance of the role of the interpreter draws the public's attention because of the emergence and popularity of liaison interpreting. The interpreter, who once has been considered as an invisible language assistant, increasingly plays multiple roles during the interpreting process, such as the cultural-mediator as well as the co-constructor of the communication. This report is based on the author's practice as the interpreter for the Sino-Austria Nanotechnology and New Material Workshop and Matchmaking in September 2017.The author worked as an interpreter for Professor Ille c.Gebeshuber, who came to attend the event on behalf of Vienna University of Technology---Institute of Applied Physics. In this report, the author describes the interpreting task, the whole interpreting process, and discusses three roles that the interpreter plays in the interpreting process: message converter, cultural mediator, and communication co-constructor.The author hopes that this report could provide inspiration for other practitioners of liaison interpreting.
