An Analysis Of The Role Of A Guide-interpreter

Against the backdrop of globalization and China's reform and opening up,tourism in China has enjoyed prosperous development in recent decades,during which China ushers in a great number of tourists from abroad.During this process,guide-interpreters play a crucial role in promoting cross-cultural communications.He who wants to be a qualified guide-interpreter must clearly know what kind of roles he should play in a guide interpreting task.This report is based on author's experience of being a guide-interpreter to Chen Clan Ancestral Hall for several foreign professors who engaged in law translation.It was their first time to come to Guangzhou and all the professors showed great curiosity in Chinese culture.In the practice,the author was responsible for guest-receiving and providing liaison interpreting for guests.This report gives a full picture of the interpreting task,as well as the whole interpreting process.What's more,the author has discussed four roles--information deliverer,culture mediator,independent conversation participant and guest receptionist--that a guide-interpreter should play in an interpreting task in the second half of this thesis.The author hopes that this report could provide some enlightenment and inspiration to later practitioners of guide interpreting and thus she can do her part in prompting smoother inter-cultural communication.
