Turn-taking is a basic speech-exchange system, which occurs in all types of conversational communication. When two different languages are used and an interpreter is involved in a conversation,turn-taking occurs among at least three parties--two interlocutors and one interpreter. The interpreter, therefore, plays a certain role in managing turns. This report is based on a liaison interpreting practice conducted by the author--China-Australia IoT Fair. The author selects the perspective of turn and turn-taking and reviews the previous researches. She analyzes the transcript of the interpreted task and tries to summarize the turn-managing strategies in liaison interpreting and how she can improve her performance to ensure smooth communication between the two parties from the perspective of turn-taking.Such strategies include taking turns, creating turns, interrupting turns, postponing turns and conveying turns with extra explanation.Hopefully, this report can help student interpreters including the author herself improve their performance in liaison interpreting. |
