The Chinese New Sensation writers have created a series of impressive images of Shanghai flaneur in the 1920 s to 1930 s.Originated from Charles Baudelaire and Walter Benjamin's works, the flaneur in the New Sensation fictions are those who keep roaming, observing and having shocking experiences in the urban space.Yet they have never been overeager in it.Instead, they are capable of keeping a distance from the modern urban life, which enables them to hold critical thinking on it.The attitude of both embracing and doubting urban civilization and the suffering of spiritual void caused by material worship of the Shanghai flaneur in New Sensation fictions are the true circumstances of most people under the attack of modern civilization at the early twentieth century in Shanghai.Having the brave and sincerity to reveal and satirize on such an contradictory attitude which also held by themselves, the New Sensation writers have brought a fresh wind for the Chinese literary world, which was deeply influenced by parties and political ideology at that time.Combining their own roaming experiences and urban life experiences, the New Sensation writers have also creatively employed spatially, cinematic narrative and innovative expression to shape the flaneur's image, created a set of utterance of urban writing which is quite different from traditional Chinese literature, and inspired the later writers of Shanghai and urban literature. As for nowadays' urban residents, roaming is still one of the most fundamental and important components in daily life practice. Therefore,to study the literary and cultural criticism of urban modernity through the image of flaneur is still an effective critical perspective.
